(Students, and Teacher Don Sprangers in Scotland.)

A group of our students received the Peter Gray Scholarship during their time spent in Scotland, back in November. The Students had traveled to Scotland for the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Schools Network (ASCSN) meeting. The meeting took place on the three year anniversary of the passing of Peter Gray. Mr. Gray was the Hatchery manager from the Kielder Hatchery on the River Tyne in Scotland.

The Downeast Salmon Federation (DSF), in East Machias, Adopted the hatchery methods of Peter Grey, and Peter also presented on his methods to Washington Academy students.

"It is us who are responsible for the state of the Atlantic Salmon, and it is therefore our duty to restore their populations." - Peter Gray

DSF's hatchery in East Machias, the Peter Grey Hatchery, continues Peter's legacy by continuing his restoration efforts.

To honor the work of the students from Washington Academy, Peter Gray's daughter Jill and son Allan, have created a scholarship in their father's name. The Peter Gray Fisheries Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Washington Academy student who shows interest in hatchery operation or is pursuing a degree in fisheries biology. This year the award was presented to the six students from the Washington Academy Salmon Team, who participated in the the ASCSN Scotland Meetings. Congratulations to Oona Molyneaux, River Hodgdon, Sara Johnson, Zoie Zanoni, Kaylyn Brown, and Haley Murphy for receiving this scholarship.

WA Student Council Returns

IMG_1710

Cameryn Farnsworth, Meg Moulton, Max Peeters, Jacob McBrine

For the first time in many decades Washington Academy will have a student council. Recently, interested students applied for council consideration in the form of a written essay. The essay is to explain the student's desire for sitting on the council. A faculty panel will now carefully evaluate the essays (submitted without names for anonymous decision making) and ultimately choose two members from each class and residential dorms. These members will then serve as working members with the founding members, Seniors Max Peeters, Meg Moulton, Jacob McBrine, and Junior Cameryn Farnsworth.

The new council, comprised of twelve members, will meet monthly, attend state and regional meetings, participate in community work, and problem solve to improve different aspects of student life at WA. The purpose of the council is to provide opportunities for student leadership within the school and work with other student councils throughout the state.

Council selection will be made and announced next week. We look forward to congratulating the new members of our new student council and excited for their future leadership!

New Indoor Track Team to Compete

DSC_0034

Twenty two indoor track athletes, coached by Daniel Moriarity and Toby Lamb, will compete this Saturday January, 7th at the University of Maine, Orono. The WA team will compete against Bangor area high schools in a variety of events including; middle and short sprints, hurdles, long jump, triple jump and high jump. These events are very similar to outdoor track and field events however they take place indoors. Participants may compete in three individual events per meet. Individual qualifying times will be eligible for a state championship meet later in the season.

Sprinting and jumping are popular events amongst the WA track athletes. This exciting new sport seems a bit challenging without an indoor track facility, but coaches and students have found creative ways to practice. When students are not practicing after school in the WA hallways they are traveling to the UMaine facility once a week. Good luck Raiders at your first official meet this Saturday!

Law & Order in the Classroom

A new class titled Law and Order finds it's way to the WA classroom in 2017. The class will be taught by Mr. Lee Gautier. Mr. Gautier joined WA this fall with International Affairs/ Economics, and Secondary Social Studies degrees. Mr. Gautier intends to expose students to our legal system and how it operates, teach them to understand their constitutional rights, and how the legal system has been developed.

Students will have an opportunity to experience courtroom settings, mock trials and investigations of special cases. They will be encouraged to voice their own opinions and positions, and agree or disagree with one another. Mr. Gautier states, "I am not intending to make students into lawyers but want to educate them on how the law affects their lives."

With a new semester starting, there are lots of new and exciting things going on here at WA. We have a new 3-D printer that is being used to print robots, drones, and more! We also have new pairs of virtual reality goggles that will be used to tap into the creative minds of our students in art and help their visual ideas bloom in the digital world.

IMG_1746

We currently have several pairs of virtual reality goggles that are being tested out and played with, so that in the future they can be implemented in our art program. The goggles allow the wearer to see digital images in 3 dimensions. The goggles we are currently testing have a place to insert a cell phone. Using an app on the phone you can feel like you are on a roller coster, swimming in the ocean, or even walking around the school with dinosaurs. The goggles that we hope to get in the future are more advanced and will allow students to draw and create things around them in virtual reality using a wand and the goggles.

Washington Academy's National Honors Society, Senior Class, and Athletic Department have earned a combined total of over $900 for Chad Perry. Chad is a Senior at Narraguagus High School, who has recently been diagnosed with bone cancer. Chad is a friend to many of our students and helping him and his family has become a cause near and dear to our hearts.

Some of the fundraisers that have been conducted include a bake sale and a 50/50 Raffle. Washington Academy student Brecken Barker won the raffle, and without hesitation, gave her half of the money back to Chad and his family .

We are proud of our students for coming together to help a friend, and we are sure that they will offer more support in the future.

On Wednesday January 26th all of our students gathered in the gym to hear more about what the Latin class has to offer, as well as participate in a trivia game, using the buzzers that the Latin class uses in their competitions. Dr. Shaw, the Latin teacher, demonstrated how the competitions work by asking students questions about WA and having them use the buzzers to compete with other students to see who could answer the quickest.

Our CNA (certified nursing assistant) program is offered to Juniors and Seniors who are at least 16 years old at the start of the class. This is a year long course, running from September until the end of May. Students complete coursework, lab practice, and then participate in clinicals, which are held at the Maine Veterans Home and Down East Community Hospital. At the completion of the course, students will take the Maine CNA Certification Exam, which will award them their certification as a Nursing Assistant. This is often acknowledged and honored in other states, because of their extensive training. This year the CNA Program has 11 students, 10 ladies and 1 young man. They are almost halfway through with their clinical assignments.

Dance

The dance class learned about Mexican Folkloric dances this week in collaboration with the Spanish class. Mrs. Kempthorne is from Mexico, so she showed the students some traditional dances from her native town.

Last week the dance class did a unit on Scotland and learned many different dances. It was special because some of our students went to Scotland earlier this year. The dance class will be looking to cover at least 9 other countries this semester!

Art classes have been working on recreating totem poles from the native cultures of the Northwest Tribes. Students have made individual characters from clay. These brightly colored characters are then stacked on top of one other on a dowel. This project is a great way for students to learn about a different culture and incorporate into their art. Totem poles will be on display at Pops Night scheduled for Wednesday March 15th.

Washington Academy's JMG class had the privilege of going to Washington County Community College for a Bank Of America Day. On February 7th, the juniors and seniors in Mrs. Lenfestey's JMG class participated for a workshop day. n this workshop we saw videos about credit. We learned simple skills to help us keep track of credit. The second was the Resume & Interview Skills, they presented a slideshow. Throughout this day I learned a lot of things. I also learned that it is okay to not know where your path may lead. At the end of the day when we were talking to the Bank Of America employees, I learned that most of them didn't even go to school for banking, but fell in love with it. DSC_0043 2

Is it possible for a married couple to have different versions of the same events, especially if it involves cherished high school memories? Well that's the premise for this year's one-act play "That's Not How I Remember It" by Don Zolidis. The Washington Academy Players will be performing this comedy for the regional one-act play festival. It is a gender biased infusion of humor based on somewhat different renditions of 1986 when "Mom" and "Dad" first met. Sound familiar for some of you?

The cast includes both veterans and newcomers. On Monday, March 20th, the Holocaust and Genocide Studies Class traveled to the Bass Harbor Memorial Library to hear Holocaust survivor, Louise Israel, share her personal history. Louise is a volunteer who speaks at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC. She was only 3 months old when Holland became occupied by Germany. Louise and her family hid in the attic of a four story row house in Amsterdam throughout the war. Our students enjoyed having the opportunity to meet someone who actually lived through the history that they are currently learning.

Write up by WA Junior Dillon Preston
"During the 25th Annual Jobs for Maine's Graduates Career Development Conference or "CDC" trip hosted at Thomas College, high school JMG students around the state came together as one in Waterville, Maine to do a number of different activities and learn valuable knowledge to help progress them through life. Here at Washington Academy, a group of determined Juniors and Seniors who were fortunate enough to get a chance to go on such an exciting and amazing trip. These students were eager to show off their skills to the rest of JMG. They competed in a handful of events that challenged them and put them in situations that they had to persevere and overcome obstacles, some as a team and some by themselves in 1-on-1 events like Interview Skills."
WA JMG received 6 trophies including two for first place, three for second place, and one for third place! Congratulations Mrs. Lenfestey and JMG students.

As an extra effort to collect funds the JMG class has also designated that the proceeds from Jean Friday on May 5th will also be donated to the foundation. This is another great project from our 35 JMG students and Mrs. Rebecca Lenfestey.
