On Saturday, October 20 the volleyball team brought home the gold! The Lady Raiders battled the Calais Blue Devils in a nail biting match to win the Class C State Championship. WA won 3 out of the 4 sets, with the 4th set scoring a close 25 to 22. Although, every player contributed to the championship win, Sophomore Morgan Schwinnwas selected as the 2018-19 MaxPreps/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Player of the Week for her championship game performance. The AVCA recognizes student athletes who have demonstrated outstanding play on the court. The team had a 14-3 record for the season. It can be said that the members of the championship team have a very special bond and it is this camaraderie coupled with skill that led the way for a state championship title. Head Coach Corey Schwinn warmly remarks, "So very proud of the accomplishments that this team had both and off the court. The skill, confidence, attitude, and determination of this team grew to championship quality as the season progressed. They faced challenges as all teams do, but the close friendship bonds within this team allowed them to weather the storms and shine in the end." The girls were met with a celebratory motorcade and fireworks when they returned Saturday evening. Congratulations to all members of the 2018 Volleyball Team!

Congratulations boys varsity soccer for the Northern Maine Runners-Up title and a great season of hard work. On Wednesday, October 31 the team battled Presque Isle High School for the Northern Maine Championship title. The game was close with a 2-1 final score. After the game, Coach Chris Gardner reflected on the season by remarking that the boys had come from behind, moved up 3 seeds, and that the team wasn't even predicted to be competing for the Northern Maine Championship title. Great season Raiders!

The Umiak, a 20-foot 18th century-style rowing vessel arrived at Washington Academy on Wednesday, November 14. The boat was acquired by the 1775 Machias Committee of Safety, also known as the local Revolutionary War Reenactors. The Umiak has been acquired by the group from KROKA Expeditions in Marlow, New Hampshire. The reenactors have now partnered with WA to maintain and house the boat, while students use it to learn rowing and sailing skills. A representative from KROKA visited WA on Thursday, November 15 and presented the history and many sailing adventures of the Umiak, some of which included the Maine coastline. Students from the Outdoor Leadership, Modern Day Apprenticeship and Marine Vocational classes participated in the presentation and welcomed the boat to the WA fleet. The 1775 Machias Committee of Safety hope that students will become interested in local history and begin participating in reenacting our living history events.

The annual holiday door decorating contest began last week and the competition this year has been fierce. Students have been busy decorating and putting the finishing touches on their adviser doors with holiday themed decorations. Popular themes this year included: the Grinch, snowmen, Charlie Brown, reindeer, Santa's workshop and many many more. Each door theme was identified in a category of traditional or creative. Even the staff participated in their own door decorating contest which the senior class officers determined the winner. The event has always been a great way to kick off the holiday spirit and celebrate the creativity of WA staff and students. The student door winners this year were the Freshman advisees of Mrs. Paula McBrine with their traditional depiction of a gingerbread house and the most creative student door was awarded to Mrs. Johnson's Sophomore advisees' #snowmanyourself theme. This door had a photo opportunity in the head of the snowman. And once again this year the Front Office was awarded the staff winner for their woodland theme which even included a simulated campfire, real smores ingredients and cardboard animals. Winners will enjoy a breakfast on Friday, December 21. Thank you to all participants for making WA merry and bright!

It certainly looks a lot like Christmas at WA but it is also feeling a lot like it! This Wednesday WA National Honor Society (NHS) and STARS students delivered over 150 gifts to the Community Giving Tree in Machias. The "Make My Day Toy Drive" helps to provide gifts for needy children in the local community. Over the past few weeks WA has been collecting new and unused toy donations from the community, staff and students. A wide variety of toys were donated for boys and girls including dolls, stuffed animals, matchbox cars, plastic sleds, and much more. The WA gift delivery will create many smiles on Christmas morning. Thank you to everyone who donated and supported this tremendous student effort!

Last week a 2018 graduate lost his home to a terrible house fire. In an effort to help the alum, our Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) and National Honor Society (NHS) students have created a candy cane fundraising competition. The groups are selling different flavored candy canes for $1 each and the money collected is being counted by grade. The grade with the most candy cane sales will receive a complimentary breakfast on Friday, December 21. The WA nurse and CNA instructor Mrs. Ruth Ann Harrod has even donated a jar of her famous caramel popcorn for a silent auction. The fundraising proceeds will be given to the alum before the holiday school break. It's a great feeling to be a Raider!

The first semester may be winding down but the cultural dance class is just getting "warmed up." WA dance instructor Ms. Finn and WA Spanish instructor Ms. Kempthorne collaborated this fall by combining their classes to learn the history and cultural dances of the Spanish speaking country Colombia. Students learned the traditional dance Cumbia and danced to the song Baile Esta Cumbia by Selena Quintanilla. The lesson was taught in both English and Spanish.

In the month of December the Cultural Dance Class went into the community and provided a variety of holiday dances for the Maine Veterans Home and DLTC East Point Nursing Home in Machias. Once again dance students experienced a special collaboration with WA Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students, who were also visiting the veterans home conducting clinical hours. CNA students, dressed in their scrubs, joined the dancers for a few performances.

On Friday, January 11 cultural dance students will once again go out into the community and visit Elm Street Elementary School for an interactive dance performance. Looking ahead to the new year, Ms. Finn is planning a first time collaboration with the entire Fine Arts Department for a Spring Concert performance that will combine dance, music and visual art class students.

The WA Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Class has just begun their clinical hours at the Maine Veterans Home and Down East Community Hospital (DECH). The class consists of 12 students who began their semester in the classroom studying various body parts, bodily functions, and CNA best practices. Under the supervision of trained medical staff CNA students will now spend 12 sessions practicing and increasing their knowledge through hands on experience. Clinical days are scheduled on Fridays and Monday class time is always reserved for classroom discussion and shared information about each clinical experience. These students will become certified in May and actually be "work ready" as Certified Nursing Assistants. The course is taught by Ms Ruth Ann Harrod who brings over 50 years of registered nursing experience into the classroom.

WA wrestling coach Lupe Soto welcomed two lady Raiders to the squad this year. Freshmen Izzy Lamband Rowan Luuring joined the team in November as first time wrestlers and have already won one match each. Izzy Lamb wrestles in the 115 pound weight class and had her first win on Saturday, December 15 against a Dexter High School wrestler at Penobscot Valley High School PVHS). Izzy elaborates on her decision to wrestle, " I like to stay active and wanted to participate in a winter sport. I chose wrestling because it is new and it not only keeps me active but it is something I am improving at."

The ladies have joined a team with veteran team members senior Josiah Brown and junior Tanner Rolfe and are excited to learn from their successes. Also on December 15 at the PVHS match Josiah placed 2nd overall in his weight class. The team now looks forward to their next match scheduled for Saturday, January 5 at Calais High School. Go Raiders!

On Friday, January 11, Elm Street School welcomed Washington Academy Chorus with applause as they sang five of their favorite concert pieces for Grades 3 through 8 students and staff in the Elm Street Gym.

WA Chorus members at Elm Street School.

Many WA musicians shared their student experiences, and introduced Elm Street students to our growing music program and what music classes and clubs we offered this year, namely: Chorus, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Beginning Lab Band, the Washingtones Acapella Choir, Pep Band and Guitar classes.

Music Director Bonnie Atkinson, spoke to the audience in between songs, and introduced chorus members, including two Elm Street graduates who now are Freshmen at Washington Academy. Four international students shared their home town and country, and also taught everyone how to say, "I love to sing. I love music" in their native languages. The students did a great job in breaking up the phrases so the elementary students could repeat them back.

WA Chorus with Music Director Bonnie Atkinson.

It was a wonderfully interactive experience that excited and their students to locate Vietnam, France, Indonesia, Turkey and the Netherlands on their world maps in their classrooms.

This opportunity meant a lot to the singers. It is always great to gift music to local schools!

The student body assembled Tuesday, January 14, to enjoy The Maine Steiners, UMaine's premiere all male acapella group, for an hour performance - and a reprieve from studying for final exams.

Students and staff assemble for The Maine Steiners.

The Maine Steiners traveled to East Machias from the University of Maine, in Orono. Their goals are to share their passion of the arts, and to promote the love of music with all who will listen.

The group engaged WA students and staff with comedy, performance and harmonized vocals; including a serenade for Music Director Bonnie Atkinson. Their group included leads, baritone, and bass in "barbershop" style arrangements, multiple modern popular songs, and ended with "Maine Stein Song", a UMaine tradition.

Maine Steiners serenade Music Director Bonnie Atkinson.

Ending on a high note, the group members took the opportunity to introduce themselves and declare their majors. They pointed out to the audience that among them there were only two music concentrations (one musician and one vocal) further underscoring that music can be a part of your life even if it isn't your primary focus.

After three days of final exams this week, the first semester is officially over. Students and teachers spent the first two days of the week reviewing the semester and preparing for finals.

Even though students have been busy, there has been a bit of fun around campus....even within a final exam! Science teacher, Donald Sprangers' Coastal Ecology students enjoyed an interactive class final titled the "Council of Beings."

Fourteen students dressed in the part of a variety of species and presented their story to an imaginary human audience. Students were instructed to share wisdom, knowledge indigenous to their species.

Coastal Ecology is a course that involves students in environmental research and restoration efforts in a number of ecosystems. This semester students have studied forest ecology and wildlife management, evaluated water quality of local lakes and rivers, and conducted wetland surveys.

Species presentations for the final exam included the following: Black Panther, Quokka, Wolf, Chanterelle Mushroom, Netherland Dwarf Rabbit, Spiny Dogfish Shark, Asian Elephant, Saw Scaled Viper, Sea Otter, Lobster, Jellyfish, Interior Alaskan Wolf, Koala, Big Fin Reef Squid, and even a watershed portrayed by Mr. Sprangers himself. Well done Council of Beings!

Students took part in customer service, marketing and sales training, engaged in Employer Roundtable and Speed Networking Activities and were encouraged to speak with many different businesses to explore workforce tracks. JMG students enjoyed their experiences learning sales techniques, sales pitches, and an activity that emphasized team building, problem solving and critical thinking skills. They had to select a product at random, figure out what it was, and then come up with a place to market that product. Students reflected on the day:

"The whole day was a really good experience and helped prepare me for a successful future." - Elizabeth Graham

"I like learning from others' experiences, and how not to do certain things."
- Aeva Pressley

"The day helped me learn key factors about running my own business. Learning how to market a product was helpful, and really interesting to see." - Cassidy Murphy

"It was great to learn about a field of work that I never really knew about before. It sparked interest in something I didn't know that I was interested in before this experience." - Hailey Boutin

Students will be participating in many upcoming experiential learning opportunities - in career development and community based activities. Their third quarter schedule includes:

2/27 - Titan Challenge, Machias Savings Bank

Seniors have officially begun their last semester as WA Raiders. Many have begun the college application process and several have already received word about their acceptance!

student acceptance board
College acceptance board in the Guidance Department hallway.

We are very proud of all our students. Those with aspirations to pursue post secondary education, are recognized on the Guidance Office board once they have have received college acceptance letters.

Since the fall, seniors have been learning and preparing for the college/university application, financial aid and scholarship processes. Twice a week the Guidance Department meets with seniors during Raider Time. The actual college application process has been streamlined by the Common Application, an admissions application that allows students to apply to multiple colleges and universities by using the same electronic application.

Last quarter an admissions counselor from the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) visited WA for a "UMM Application Reading Day". The day provided seniors with the opportunity to present their transcripts to a UMM counselor for review and be considered for an "on-the-spot- acceptance." Students currently engaged in the college application and acceptance process recently remarked:

early college acceptance students
(L-R) Mailena Alecia, Ethan Chute, and BriannaRenshaw.

"At first applying seemed daunting - this could make or break my future, but I was really organized. I used the common application to stay on top of the process and to meet the deadlines. Waiting to hear, and preparing yourself to open a reply letter from a college can be very nerve racking."
- Mailena Alecia

"The process was less complicated and easier than I thought. One minute it's Raider time and I am applying, and the next I am receiving an admittance letter to UMM. I am pretty excited for the college experience, to leave the house and live on my own on campus - the freedom to spread my wings and fly."
- Ethan Chute

"The application process felt easy. I used the common application for all of my schools. I have already received a few acceptance letters. I especially like the Husson University singing letter and logoed hat and decals. I am excited for the next chapter! I will be living in an apartment with two friends from WA!"
- Brianna Renshaw

College acceptance and financial packages go hand in hand. The Mitchell Scholarship online application is due April 1 . This $10,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a WA senior.

To learn more about this scholarship please see The Mitchell Scholarship.

There are many opportunities throughout the year to meet with college/university admissions representatives who visit WA. The next opportunity will be with a Washington County Community College (WCCC) representative on Monday, February 4, at 1 pm. Interested students should contact the Guidance Office.

Mason bee blue - macro

The Sustainability Club is working on a new project - Bee Boxes. Also known as Bee Blocks or Bee Houses. This idea was inspired by the concept of Mason Bee Boxes, shelter for the Orchard Mason Bees, small bees native to North America and found here in downeast Maine.

Sustainability Club member and organizer sophomore
Natalia Kempthorne-Curiel states, "These bees can pollinate as many as 1000 flowers a day. It is extremely important to keep the Mason bees safe because they have large impacts on our environment, and they also affect the blueberry industry which is very important to many communities all along Maine, including our very own Washington County. Mason bees do not use hives like honeybees, but in nature, mason bees place their eggs in holes drilled by beetles or woodpeckers. The bees will also use spaces between roof shingles or other narrow openings around the garden. The Mason bee box is a way of helping out the bees, and it very easy to make."

Wrestling Champion!

Ten years ago Josiah Brown began his passion for wrestling with Washington Academy Youth Wrestling. Today, Josiah holds two 2019 championship titles and is seated first in the 182- pound weight class at the 2019 Class B State Championship being held Saturday, February 16 at Mattannawcook High School. On Saturday, February 2 at the Penobscot Valley Championship, Josiah was also voted Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet by team coaches!

This fall Josiah played football and fit in extra training by wrestling in pick up matches preparing for this season. He understands the importance of a healthy pre-match diet concentrating on hydration and eating a lot of protein and greens. It is very important for him to weigh in at the proper weight. He warmly remarks about being seated first in a state championship match, "I don't think about being seated first, only that it is a big wrestling match of friends." And rightfully so, over the past four years he has made valuable friendships with his opponents from Ellsworth, Calais and Bucksport High Schools.

When the season finishes Josiah will look forward to graduation and a possible future with the US Coast Guard or attending Maine Maritime Academy. As for his championship match as a senior he states, " I'm not really thinking about it being my last match, just about finishing it right!"

Good luck Josiah!
